Shandong University is a comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education of China, with its origins dating back to the Shandong University Hall founded in 1901. It is a national "Double First-Class" (Class A) university and one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China. The Qingdao Campus, located on the coast of Aoshan Bay in Jimo District, Qingdao, was officially opened in September 2016 and covers an area of about 2,000 mu. The campus hosts a number of schools and institutes, including the School of Life Sciences, the School of Ocean, the School of Information Science and Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Technology, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and the Institute of Frontier and Interdisciplinary Sciences, together with national-level research platforms such as the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology.
